I Pledge Allegiance is the story of Libby and her great aunt, Lobo. Lobo is from Mexico, but the United States has been her home for many years, and she wants to become a U.S. citizen. At the end of the week, Lobo will say the Pledge of Allegiance at a special ceremony. Libby is also learning the Pledge this week, at school – at the end of the week, she will stand up in front of everyone and lead the class in the Pledge. Libby and Lobo practice together – asking questions and sharing stories and memories – until they both stand tall and proud, with their hands over their hearts.
You can enter to win a set of 35 high-quality, brand new copies of the title I Pledge Allegiance thanks to the picture book’s co-author (and friend of First Book) Pat Mora.
Pat is a founder of Día (Children’s Day, Book Day) – a celebration of children and books promoting literacy all year round, culminating with Día celebrations in April.
Pat is excited to share this title with the members of our community of educators, and wrote a special poem to celebrate “bookjoy” and our communal commitments to reading and learning:
memories from El Paso, Texas,
of going to the public library,
reading books, prizes.
Children’s Day, Book Day
El día de los niños, El día de los libros,
Día, celebrating all year long, day by day—
all children, all languages, all cultures.
written with my daughter Libby Martinez
about our dear aunt who became a citizen
in her seventies. Imagine!
PLEDGE, memories, summer reading.
