What Tashinee the Intern is Up to at First Book

Tashinee Hooks is an intern at First Book and a former student at Wheatley Elementary School, a First Book recipient group. Here’s what Tashinee had to say about how her experiences at Wheatley Elementary prepared her for high school and her internship.

Tashinee Hooks, First Book intern

My experience at Wheatley Elementary School
My experience at Wheatley was amazing. The teachers seemed like they were life-long friends, which made the school welcoming and inviting. When new children or teachers came to Wheatley, they quickly became part of the Wheatley family. Even though I don’t attend Wheatley anymore I still do what I can to help make the school an even better place.

Where I am Now: McKinley Technology High School
I am currently 14 years old and am in the 9th grade at McKinley Technology High School where I take double the amount of classes I took in middle school. My busy schedule helps my days go by smoothly. My favorite subjects are English, Spanish, Biotech and Math.

If I could give advice to any student entering high school I would let them know that high school can be really confusing at first. But, trust me, the hard work will pay off.

Interning at First Book
I learned about First Book through Erica Perl, who used to teach creative writing at Wheatley and now works at First Book. A few years later Erica contacted me and asked if I would be interested in interning. I of course said yes and a few weeks later, began interning at First Book. I was excited because I love being surrounded by books!

As an intern, I do a variety of things from working on the computer to organizing the books in the office. One of the other things I’m going to do during my internship is write book reviews of books that will be available on the First Book Marketplace or through the First Book National Book Bank. I’m reading ‘Shadowland’ by Alyson Noel now and when I finish I’ll tell you all about it!

My Book Recommendations
I really love the Twilight saga by Stephanie Meyer. She is one of my favorite authors!

Putting the Adult in Young Adult Literature

Guest Blogger Rachael Walker is the Outreach Consultant for AdLit.org, a national multimedia initiative offering resources to the parents and educators of struggling readers and writers in grades 4-12 and for Reading Rockets, a national multimedia initiative which aims to inform and inspire parents, teachers, childcare providers, and others who touch the life of a child by providing comprehensive, accessible information on how to teach kids to read and help those who struggle. Rachael began her career in children’s literacy at Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), has also served as a consultant to the NEA’s Read Across America campaign, and was most recently the Executive Director of Reach Out and Read of Metro DC.

I was pleased to read Susan Carpenter’s article in the Los Angeles Times last week about more and more adults reading young adult literature.  But I was a little sad too—the secret is out!  Now I’ll have adults as well as kids to compete with for the newest John Green novel on the library shelf.

Of course, this crossover audience has been building for some time thanks to authors like Stephanie Meyer and J.K. Rowling.  But there is loads of young adult and children’s literature out there that has grown up appeal:

Biographies.  Biographies written for tweens and teens are great for adults.  As a parent, I’m finding that these quick reads have lots of great history and facts that can help you help your child on his own learning journeys.  Spend an hour or two with a title from the Giants of Science series and impress your kids during homework time!
