One Million Books from First Book for Victims of Hurricane SandySince Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast last fall, First Book has been working to help local schools, community programs and families rebuild their lost libraries.

Now, thanks to our friends at Random House, we have the resources to rebuild tens of thousands of home and classroom libraries: over one million brand-new, high-quality kid’s books.

We just need to get the word out.

Help us by sharing this blog post with anyone you know who works with children in need, and tell them to sign up with First Book today.

Recognizing the wide-ranging impact of this storm on many aspects of children’s lives, schools and programs do not have to have been physically damaged by the storm to apply for books. Any school or program that was affected by the storm or serves children in need in one of the 13 affected states is encouraged to sign up to receive books.

NOTE: The books are available to schools and programs in the 13 states designated by FEMA as being affected by Hurricane Sandy: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC.

And the winner is …

This morning in Washington DC, First Book distributed our 100 millionth brand-new book.

This morning at Martha’s Table, an amazing community program serving homeless families in Washington DC, First Book distributed our 100 millionth brand-new book. (Check out this great story on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.)

That’s not a typo. Since the organization was founded in 1992, First Book has provided 100 million brand-new, high-quality children’s books to kids in need throughout the United States.

We couldn’t decide what the actual 100 millionth book should be, so we let the people decide! Over 12,000 votes were cast in our ‘Ten Books Every Child Should Own’ contest.

And the winner?

“Green Eggs & Ham”, by Dr. Seuss!

Kyle Zimmer, First Book’s president and co-founder, presented Chase-Kennedy Williams, age 4, with her very own copy of “Green Eggs & Ham”. Afterwards Kyle read the book to Chase-Kennedy and her classmates, after which they each got their own copy of the book to take home.

Watching Kyle give that book to little Chase-Kennedy was an incredible moment for everyone at First Book. The look on her face is one we’ve seen thousands and thousands of times when kids who have few or no books of their own are given a brand-new, beloved book of their very own, but we never get tired of it.

First Book staff with kids at Martha's Table in Washington DCMartha’s Table has a special place in our hearts here at First Book. Not only is it a terrific program that does an enormous amount of good for children and families in our home town of Washington DC, it’s where First Book was born twenty years ago, when Kyle, then a corporate lawyer volunteering in her spare time, realized that the children she was working with had no books of their own at home. She founded First Book, along with two friends, to ensure that those children, and others, would have access to the books they needed.

A big thank you is due to all the many partners and donors who help make our work possible, along with the heroic educators at programs like Martha’s Table across the country who are on the front lines every day. We couldn’t do it without you!

Okay, celebration’s over. Back to work. 100 million books is a whole lot of books, but there are plenty more kids out there waiting for us.

How First Book Helped Save the MLK Day Parade

Jun07

Brian Minter Written by Brian Minter

Because of First Book, over 4,000 students are happy that they know about Dr. Martin L. King Jr., his legacy and love of literature. In the words of Dr. King, thank you for seeking happiness for others. Your continued support and inspiration for the MLK Parade of Book Project made the difference in the Pensacola community.
– Pastor Charles Morris, Bethel Youth Development

'Martin's Big Words' on the First Book MarketplaceWe got a call not long ago from Bethel Youth Development, a nonprofit that works with kids from low-income families in Pensacola, Fla. Every year, they host an parade of books on MLK Day in honor of Dr. Martin L. King Jr., and they needed 2,000 copies of ‘Martin’s Big Words’, a picture book that tells Dr. King’s story in his own words, as well as 1,000 copies of a second book, ‘Thank You, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’.

Award-winning books for young readers and some dedicated local educators working hard to get the resources they needed for their kids? Music to our ears! That’s exactly the kind of problem First Book was created to solve.

There was one difficulty. We didn’t actually HAVE those two books.

But every problem is an opportunity in disguise, as they say, so we contacted our friends at Random House, the publishers of both books, and because we were able to ask for so many copies of the books, they agreed to offer us both titles for the First Book Marketplace, our website where educators who work with kids in need can get high-quality, award-winning titles at a fraction of the normal retail cost.

Bethel Youth Development and their new books from First BookSo Bethel Youth Development was able to get the books they needed in time for the parade, and continue their amazing work with kids in Pensacola.

At retail price, the books would have cost over $32,000. But by working with First Book, Bethel Youth Development was able to get all 3,000 books for $8,150. (Sometime people question the value of giving new books to kids in need, asking why used books and local donations won’t do the job. But, as we have learned, not only are these channels typically insufficient to meet the needs of large programs like this one, there is an enormous value in providing something new to children who often have never owned a book of their very own.)

In addition to helping Bethel Youth Development in their important work, this was also a win for Random House, as they were able to reach these new readers with their books — readers whose families could likely not have afforded the books at retail prices.

We love stories like this.

One Million Books in Just Ten Days: Seattle!

Apr18

Brian Minter Written by Brian Minter

One Million Books in Just Ten DaysFirst Book staff and volunteers are lining ‘em up and knocking ‘em down this week as we work to distribute over one million brand-new books to schools and programs serving kids in need across the country.

There are 350,000 new books in the Seattle warehouse, donated by our friends at Random House, Disney Publishing Worldwide and Townsend Press. About 100,000 of those books will be picked up by local teachers and nonprofit leaders, while the rest will be shipped out to similar programs across the country.

“I got the chance yesterday to work alongside Weedy, who helps run an after-school program in LaHood, Wash. that serves 350 children, mostly from low-income families. She was so excited to get books for her students that she was coming to the warehouse twice — once to pick up books for her kids and once just to volunteer!” — Kim, First Book staffer

First Book doesn’t have a warehouse of our own, so when publishers donate huge quantities of new books, we rely on other nonprofits and generous companies to loan us warehouse space. This week we’re working with our friends at World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization that provides food, clothing, medicine and other desperately-needed resources to children and families around the world.

One Million Books in Just Ten Days: First Book in SeattleWe’ve worked with World Vision in the past; they’re amazing people who do a tremendous amount of good, and we’re grateful for their support.

World Vision also helped round up volunteers from the community, who are helping us move pallets, sort out shipping labels and load boxes of new books into teachers’ cars and vans. We’ve got a great bunch of volunteers out there; everyone has been friendly and full of energy and lots of kids in need will have new books next week, thanks to their efforts.

Outstanding work, Seattle!

Tune in tomorrow, when we’ll check in with another group of First Book staff and volunteers in Minneapolis.

33,000 Books to Kids! So what?

Nov14
2011
Brian Minter Written by Brian Minter

From everyone at First Book, a hearty welcome and a sincere ‘thank you’ to all our new followers on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, and an equally heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all our supporters and partners who shared last week’s social media message far and wide.

Thanks to all of you, we gained over 33,000 new followers on social media, and – true to their word – our friends at Random House Children’s Books will be donating 33,000 new books to First Book to distribute to kids in need all across the country. Outstanding work! Gold stars all around!

But you might be wondering “So what?”

30 Million Kids in Need

It’s a fair question. Is that a lot of books, in context? Where do they go? Do they have a meaningful impact? What about used books, e-books, library books, reading programs and a thousand other things?

First Book supporters provide 33,000 new books to kids in need

At First Book, we recognize the complexity and intractability of the problem. There are 30 million children living in low-income families in the United States, and those kids don’t have a lot of things that other kids do. Economic security, physical safety, adequate food, shelter and healthcare … the list is long, daunting and hurts to think about.

One thing we know is that a solid, comprehensive education is the best chance many of those kids have at succeeding in life. Another thing we know is that there are hundreds of thousands of unbelievably dedicated teachers, volunteers and community program leaders working their hearts out every day to provide those educations. It’s not an easy job, and there are no guarantees.

But without basic tools, that hard job is a lot harder. Which is where First Book comes in.

Books to Kids Who Need Them

We work with great publishers, like Random House, to get books. Some are donated, and some we buy, but the critical thing is that they are high-quality, and there are a lot of them; last year we distributed 8 million new books. (There are lots of great programs that deal with gently-used and donated books, and we support and applaud them, but for what we’re trying to do, we need to be able to offer educators large quantities of new books. It’s important.)

First Book supporters provide 33,000 new books to kids in needThose books go to schools and programs all over the country. They’re used in classrooms and in libraries, at after-school programs and tutoring programs, at food banks and homeless shelters, church groups, Head Start programs and public charter schools. First Book works with 27,000 programs, but we know we’re just scratching the surface.

So that’s what. You did a little tiny bit of good when you clicked that button or shared that Twitter message, and lots of little tiny bits of good can add up to something real. It’s a big effort, and the stakes are unimaginably high, so we’re glad you’re here.

If you’d like to learn more about First Book’s mission and the amazing people we work with, visit firstbook.org and sign up for our monthly email newsletter.

Community Sourced Audio Recording of Oz to Benefit First Book!

Jul06
2010
Written by Bonnie J.

During the 2010 American Library Association Annual Conference in Washington D.C., Random House Audio, and OverDrive recruited individuals that attended the conference to participate in Lend Your Voice, a “community-sourced” audiobook recording of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The recording took place in OverDrive’s Digital Bookmobile, on Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27th. The Digital Bookmobile is a community outreach vehicle for public libraries to promote downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video. Developed inside a 74-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer, the nationally touring vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades.

Random House Audio will edit the recording, to feature as many as 300 voices—including those of Newbery winners Christopher Paul Curtis, Rebecca Stead, Karen Cushman and several other best-selling YA and adult authors—before releasing it as a digital download. When production is completed, the audiobook will be made available for a suggested donation, and all proceeds from those donations will benefit First Book.
