Movable, pop-up, folding, and multiple-construction books from the year 1570 to the present day comprise this Smithsonian Institution Libraries’ exhibition highlighting innovative book design, which is on display in the Smithsonian Libraries Exhibition Gallery, National Museum of American History, First floor west, through September 1, 2011.

“Mockingjay” Tops All National Bestsellers Lists; Scholastic Goes Back for Second Printing

Mockingjay, the third and final book in Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, has debuted at #1 on both the USA Today and The New York Times bestseller lists. In just its first week on sale in the U.S., Mockingjay has sold more than 450,000 copies in hardcover and eBook format — prompting Scholastic to print an additional 400,000 copies. That brings the total copies of Mockingjay in print in the U.S. to 1.6 million since the book’s release on August 24th.

Actress Maria Menounos And Nestlé Help Kick Of National Literacy Month

Nestlé announced the new charitable initiative, “The Nestlé Share the Joy of Reading Program,” which will donate up to $250,000 to Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit children’s literacy organization. National Book Festival Features Favorite Author Voting.

Book-lovers will be able to select from among the roughly 500 authors who have appeared at the nine previous National Book Festivals, or will appear at this years festival. Using an alphabetical listing or voting from a page that includes each author’s biography and photograph. The top 10 vote-getters will be displayed on the voting page, with daily updates.

Leave a Mark Book Auction

This auction features marked up books, but not just any marked up book. The author of each book went through and made notes in the margin…giving the winner of these books a behind-the-scenes look at the story. Plus the proceeds benefit First Book – You can’t get any better!

Nine States and DC Win Second Round Race to the Top Grants

Along with Phase 1 winners Delaware and Tennessee, 11 states and the District of Columbia have now been awarded money in the Obama Administration’s groundbreaking education reform program that will directly impact 13.6 million students, and 980,000 teachers in 25,000 schools.

Booksellers and Bloggers Team Up for Bookrageous Calendar!

A Novel Approach: Free Books for Donations.

For the past two years, the Concord Free Press, has been publishing books and giving them away for free. The program thrives by the idea “A Book in Exchange for a Donation.” People are asked to make a voluntary donation to a charity; chart the donation on their website, and pass a book along to someone else so that this project keeps going.

Interview with Cor Blok about the Tolkien Calendar 2011

The Tolkien Calendar has become a publishing event eagerly looked forward to with Tolkien calendars from the past 30 years becoming collectors’ items.The official Tolkien calendar for this year will contain 13 paintings inspired by ‘The Lord of the Rings’, and will feature many previously unseen works of art by the Dutch artist, Cor Blok. The story behind “To Kill a Mockingbird.” As the 50th anniversary of the publication of Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” approaches, the true story behind the novel unfolds.  Find out what this world renowned book is really about!

Library of the Early Mind: a documentary exploring children’s literature.  “Library of the Early Mind” is an exploration of the art and the impact of children’s literature on our kids, our culture, and ourselves. The film features nearly 40 prominent authors and illustrators talking about their work, its genesis and its impact. The first screening will in October 2010.

Business vs. Art. This article debates how important it is for a writer or creator to focus on the art side of his or her creation versus the business side. Which do you think is more important?

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the world’s largest prize for children’s and young adult literature and the second-largest literature prize in the world. Bill Hanney presents Theatre by the Sea in Matunuck Rhode Island. Visit every Friday from July 2 through August 20th to take part in the Children’s Festival. This festival will feature original music performances, Airborne comedians, and puppet theatre!

Early book satchels used by monks go on display in Edinburgh, Scotland. The leather book satchels have gone on display as part of a three year research project into early Scottish history.
