Breakfast With Santa

Dec25

Gina Rullo Written by Gina Rullo

Santa may have been busy this holiday season but that didn’t stop him from visiting Los Molinos Unified School District to deliver books to many kids.

Students have breakfast with Santa and receive books provided by First Book Students from Los Molinos Elementary School and four other schools in the Northern California area all participated in a yearly breakfast with Santa event.  In past years, students received little gifts from Santa and his elves. This year, students received the gift of reading.

Los Molinos Unified School District is an area where 85% of students are on free and reduced lunch and are Title I. This is an area where most families live in extreme poverty so getting books to give out at this event seemed challenging. That’s when Los Molinos turned to First Book. Since books are available at such affordable prices, students from five different elementary schools all took home brand-new books to call their own.

“Parents, teachers and children could not believe that Santa would bring them such a gift”, said Jill Botts, LMUSD Board of Trustees President.

Holiday cheer was spread to many children this year as they turned through the pages of their new books with much spirit this season.

Anyone who works with kids in need is eligible to get books from First Book. To sign up, visit First Book on the web.

Provide new books to kids in need by donating to First Book

Sunday is New Year’s Day, which means a lot of taking stock, figuring out what you want to do and how to finish all the things you meant to do last year.

We hope that one of the things you choose to do before the New Year is provide new books to kids in need by including First Book in your end-of-year giving.

Click here to donate now, and provide new books to kids in need

This year, with your help …

  • First Book distributed 8 million books to kids in need.
  • First Book added 7,000 new schools and programs to our national network.
  • First Book started local volunteer chapters in over a dozen communities.

The new books we distribute to schools and programs around the country do more than put smiles on the faces of children whose families can’t afford books of their own. They provide teachers, librarians and program leaders with the resources they need to transform these children’s lives.

We’re able to do all that we do because of the help and support of our donors and volunteers; we want to say thank you and ask you to continue supporting our mission.

Donate to First Book to provide new books to kids in need

First Book distributed eight million brand-new books to kids in need this year. That’s a LOT of books, and those books have the power to change a lot of lives.

And, with your help, we want to do even more in the year to come!

Donate now to provide new books to kids in need through First Book

Every $2.50 you donate goes to provide a brand-new book to a kid in need, helping them become a reader and changing their life. And your impact will go even further this year – through Dec. 31, our friends at Disney Publishing Worldwide will match every $1 donated with another new book. Pretty great stuff.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support of First Book and the children who are counting on us.

If you’re like many of us, you grew up in a home filled with books, and so you understand how important it is for children to get excited about books and become enthusiastic, capable readers.

But there are 30 million kids in the United States who won’t have that chance, because most of them have no books of their own at home. At First Book, we’re working hard to change that, and with your help, we’re making a difference.

Click here to donate now, and help us get more books to more kids.

Every $2.50 you donate goes to provide a brand-new book to a kid in need. And your impact will go even further this year; through Dec. 31, our friends at Disney Publishing Worldwide will match every $1 donated with another new book.

Thank you so much for your continued support of First Book and the children we serve.

Happy Holiday Thursdays! Introducing Uptown Liz

Oct23

Written by Diane N.

The air’s getting a bit chillier, which can only mean one thing: the Holidays are just around the corner.  In gleeful anticipation, every Thursday from now through year’s end, we’ll be dedicating a blog post to all-things holiday.

We’re kicking it off this week by introducing Uptown Liz, the hugely popular shopping blog where gifts give back.  Founder Ramona Russell got in touch with us when the site launched.  She first found us though when researching literacy nonprofits for a class project in public relations and marketing her senior year in college.  It’s been many years since but she never forgot First Book!

It’s never too soon to start searching for gift ideas that give back.  At Uptown Liz you’ll find products that support a variety of causes, including (of course) literacy.  (Check out some really cute finger puppets that benefit UNESCO LIFE.)

And keep checking back weekly on our blog and homepage now through the holidays for a number of featured gift ideas that will support First Book!
