Celebrate poetry!

Apr21
2008
Written by Katie B.

Special thanks to Rachael Walker, Outreach Consultant for Reading Rockets, for providing this post.

April is National Poetry Month. If April showers are keeping you indoors, use children’s poetry to encourage kids to read with this special online video presentation “Meet the Author: On Poetry” from Reading Rockets. Listen and watch as six acclaimed children’s writers explore the power and beauty of poetry.

Check out too what author Pat Mora, who has written poetry collections for both children and adults, has to say about poetry. In her interview with Reading Rockets, she says, “…poetry’s my favorite form. It’s probably because it’s the most challenging. In many ways, it’s the most playful of the forms, I think.”

Pat is also the founder of El día del niños/El día del libros – Children’s Day/Book Day, the April 30 celebration that brings together children books, languages and cultures. Sharing poems is a great way to celebrate Dia!

What are some of your favorite poems?

Time Lapse Video & Inteview Round-Up

If you haven’t read already, we had an amazing presence at BEA this year. I want to thank everyone, everyone, who helps make First Book such a success at what we do.

I setup a small web cam at our booth this year to try to capture some of the activity that goes into making BEA work. The software I used bogged down after awhile — it starts with one picture every 5 seconds (2.5 minutes per second of video) and slows down to 1 picture every minute or two (causing the video to speed up a bit.) Also, the camera fell over once or twice, so you may notice that it shifts or jumps once or twice.

And in case you missed them, here are some more videos of interviews with chilrdens’ authors that we conducted all weekend long:

Joshua Prince – “I Saw an Ant on the Railroad Track”
Kirsten Miller – “Kiki Striker”
Dave McPhail – “When Sheep Sleep”
Michael Buckely – “The Sisters Grimm”
James Patterson – “Maximum Ride”
E.D. Baker – “The Frog Princess”
Walter Dean Myers – “The Harlem Hellfighters”
William Boniface – “The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy”
Erica Perl – “Chicken Bedtime is Really Early”

Author Erica Perl stopped by the First Book booth to sign copies of her books, Ninety-Three in My Family (out soon) and Chicken Bedtime Is Really Early. She gave a great interview afterwards – while she was wearing a chicken hat!

Be sure to check out the beginning where she reads from her book, Chicken Bedtime Is Really Early…

Superopolis is the home of the character Ordinary Boy, but today the man who captured his story – William Boniface – joined First Book to talk with us for a while. Mr. Boniface gave both directions to Superopolis and his insights on his book The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy amidst a conversation about his own aspirations for reading, his inspirations, and his work.

Interview with Walter Dean Myers at BEA06

Today marked another great moment for First Book. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers — that is, MR. Walter Dean Myers to the fans of Sharon Creech’s Love That Dog — signed copies of his new book from HarperCollins Children’s Books, The Harlem Hellfighters. Mr. Walter Dean Myers sat down to chat with me for what was perhaps the highlight of my BEA 2006 experience. Listen to the interview to hear about his thoughts on James Baldwin, what it’s like to be a character in a book, and more!

First Book interviews E. D. Baker

May20

Written by Katie B.

This morning I had the opportunity to interview children’s author, E.D. Baker, before she was signing copies of The Frog Princess series at First Book’s booth. This interview was Ms. Baker’s first video interview, and she was really excited to tell us more about her series as well as her thought process behind her writing.

The Frog Princess series is based on the “frog prince” story, but with a unique twist. Ms. Baker told me about how she spends a lot of time thinking about the idea and theme before she even begins writing. She then tries to focus in on creating the world and the characters in her stories. It was great to get an inside look on the writing process, from the author herself.

Ms. Baker is a former teacher, but she said that her true passion is writing. She told me that rather than writing to win awards, she is driven to write books that kids really want to read. Be sure to watch the whole interview by clicking below.

First Book Interviews James Patterson

We opened the morning with a James Patterson book signing at our booth. His book, Maximum Ride, has been wildly successful – and it was easy to tell by the number of people waiting in line to meet him…

James, like many other authors, was very generous to give us an interview after the signing – and he said some great things about First Book. Thanks to James for doing the signing and interview on behalf of First Book!
