  1. First Book Marketplace at the Social Enterprise Alliance Summit

I recently attended the Social Enterprise Alliance’s annual summit in Boston.  This gathering of social change leaders from around the world brought together entrepreneurs, lenders, investors, consultants, researchers and educators from a variety of social enterprises to share best practices and highlight leading initiatives.  I am happy to say that the First Book Marketplace was invited to present at two panels focusing on funding opportunities for innovative organizations.

I could not be prouder of the way First Book and the First Book Marketplace continue to harness the power of the private sector to advance social change.  It was also exhilarated to be reminded how many others are doing revolutionary things in this same category around the world.  To learn more about the Social Enterprise Alliance please visit www.se-alliance.org or, better yet, join us for next year’s annual gathering April 15-17 in New Orleans!

Just a few weeks ago we announced the arrival of a special edition of Martin’s Big Words to the First Book Marketplace. This incredible picture book, written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier, weaves the immortal words of Dr. King into an unforgettable portrait of a man whose dream changed America — and the world — forever.

As we pause today to remember Dr. King’s powerful legacy, we are happy to say that, just a few weeks after we added this title to our site, the book has already sold out of its first Special Edition printing (a second printing will soon be on the way). This really is a wonderful testament to both the special qualities of this wonderful book and the lasting power of Dr. King’s “big” words.

For more information on the First Book Marketplace, including a range of titles specially selected for Black History Month, please visit www.fbmarketplace.org.

The First Book Marketplace is very excited to announce the return of HarperCollins’ perennial classic, Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon, to our list of available titles for purchase online. This book, which generally retails for $6.99 is available to programs serving children from low-income families for just $1.99!

Who can forget the quiet and soothing mystery of illustrator Clement Hurd’s “great green room?” This favorite title is perfect for reading together at bedtime and easing restless children into sleep. (True confession: I still read it.)

Welcome back bears and chairs, kittens and mittens… and mush! We’ve missed you!

P.S. Some Goodnight Moon trivia: Have you ever noticed that the time on the clock changes in every picture? The little bunny settles down at 7pm, and drifts off to sleep a few minutes after 8pm at the end of the book. And check out the name of the book on the beside table…

Social Enterprise Innovation AwardOn April 17, the First Book Marketplace was awarded the Social Enterprise Innovation Award by the Social Enterprise Alliance and the Case Foundation.

This award, given to the organization “designing the most innovative model in the field of social enterprise,” was presented at the Social Enterprise Alliance’s 8th annual gathering in Long Beach, CA.

I was lucky enough to spend a several days at the gathering meeting other social entrepreneurs from across the country and around the world. From local innovators running small bakeries employing traditionally underserved employees in a single community to international organizations seeking millions of dollars in expansion capital, it was an exhilarating experience speaking with others harnessing the power of the private sector to advance social change.

Encyclopaedia BritannicaFirst Book is pleased to announce our new partnership with the award-winning reference publisher, Encyclopaedia Britannica!

This exciting partnership was kicked off at the end of last year with an incredible Book Relief donation of 54 new Encyclopaedia Britannica encyclopedia sets, all of which were sent to the Plaquemines Parish School District in Bellechasse, Louisiana. Plaquemines Parish was one of the many communities devastated by the 2005 hurricanes and the educators there were ecstatic to receive the donation, which will be used to help rebuild reference collections in the schools.

First Book is also excited to announce that we are now featuring Encyclopaedia Britannica titles on the First Book Marketplace, including the Britannica Learning Library, My First Britannica, and the Britannica Discovery Library. This partnership will provide unprecedented access to much-needed educational reference materials for nonprofit organizations serving low-income children.

“First Book’s mission fits perfectly with our goals and our corporate culture. First Book is filling an essential social need as well as providing critical resources for underfunded programs. In addition, they execute like no other organization is able to do. We have a strong commitment to First Book and couldn’t be happier with this partnership,” said Michael Ross, Senior Vice President and Education General Manager of Encyclopaedia Britannica.

    Welcome, Encyclopaedia Britannica!

As our faithful readers know, over the last 15 months Borders and its customers raised more than $1.6 million for First Book. All of the funds have gone directly to put new books into children’s hands, especially through the assistance of First Book Advisory Boards, First Book Recipient Groups and Borders stores across the country.

Our huge, heartfelt thanks goes to everyone who helped — we couldn’t have done this without you. Keep reading for a first-hand account of our collaboration in action.
