At First Book, sometimes we get notes from kids that pull at our heartstrings, while at other times, we get notes that are simply hilarious. The following message from Roneiqua falls into the latter category (and even includes a very life-like drawing!). Enjoy!

“The name of my book is CatWings. I enjoy my book, because I like cats and they are harmless. Thank you very much.” - Roneiqua

On April 12th First Book University hosted a seminar and reception in Amherst, Massachusetts. Both events were held at the inspired Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. The museum, a 40,000 square foot building situated in a 7.5-acre apple orchard, was a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of DC living!

First Book staff and the Eric Carle BugIn addition to learning about fundraising and having a book granting party, we were treated to viewing the works of great authors and illustrators such as Arnold Lobel, Leo Leonni, and of course, Eric Carle.  Our reception welcomed many guests to the art studio where Advisory Board members, Recipient Groups, and community members gathered to network and learn more about First Book as well as trying their creative hands at watercolor.  In fact, I can now say that I have a work of art hanging in the Eric Carle Museum!

Thanks to everyone who attended and made this event a success!  If you were not able to make it, but are curious about the work First Book does, join us for a conference call on May 15th.  Please email help@firstbook.org to register or visit our help center online at http://help.firstbook.org/.

We at First Book are extremely excited to announce that Borders gift cards have been distributed to over 1,000 community groups across the United States and Puerto Rico as a result of the 2007 Borders Holiday Giving Campaign.

Thanks to the generosity of Borders and their customers, almost $1.1 million was raised for First Book, bringing our grand total raised to date to $2.7 million! Community groups across the country are excitedly purchasing books for the children they serve and this is what they had to say:

“This is a terrific boost to our recipient groups’ ability to purchase books for their programs. All of us at First Book - Fairfield County appreciate having this resource to give to the literacy programs in our area.” –Leilee Reiter, Chair, First Book-Fairfield County, CT

“We had a very fun event last Saturday with the Borders Gift cards. 70 kids purchased books with the cards and had a great time. I allotted each child $25 to purchase the book(s) of their choice. It was fun watching them take out their calculators to add up their choices. Most of the kids had never been to a book store and some even commented that it was better than getting presents for Christmas! I know they will take care of, read multiple times, and cherish these books, because they picked them out.” –
Sharon Chandler, Chair, First Book-Sacramento/Yes 2 Kollege

Thanks again to everyone who made this happen, from the team at Borders to all of our friends who donated. You are truly our heroes.

Recipient Group name & location: Book Buddies, literacy program of the Molina Foundation. Based in Long Beach, CA, Book Buddies has provided books to children in California since November 2002. In 2007 Book Buddies expanded its program to seven additional states: Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Washington and Nevada.

Children Served Annually: We typically distribute 10,000 - 15,000 books a month and 100,000 books annually.

How do you use First Book books? We visit hospitals, shelters, schools, Head Start programs and community based organizations to promote literacy. First Book books are always the highlight of the visit - a brand new book that the child gets to keep for their very own. Usually we will read stories to the kids and talk about the importance of reading.

First Book University kicked off the year with a reception and Seminar in Tampa on Friday, February 22.  Both events were held at the offices of our partners, SunTrust Mortgage.  On Thursday evening, SunTrust Mortgage associates, Advisory Board members, Recipient Groups, and community members gathered to network and learn more about First Book.

Jennifer Pierce with Bess the Book Bus provided a snapshot of what it has been like to Jennifer Pierce (left) who runs and drives Bess the Book Bus along with Susan Lawton of United Way Tampa Bay.receive books from the First Book Marketplace and National Book Bank.  She brought wonderful photos and letters from the children and drove to the event in Bess.  Ken Bakunas, chair of First Book-Tampa Bay, provided the Advisory Board’s perspective and turned out to be the popular person of the evening as programs approached him to learn more about how to receive books from the Board.

Elizabeth and Anna with the White RabbitLast week we had the pleasure to join some members of First Book-Collier County for An Evening in Wonderland.  The event was a benefit gala for the Fun Time Early Childhood Academy, a Recipient Group of First Book-Collier County.  The Alice in Wonderland theme was playfully embraced throughout the evening.  Many of the Fun Time Board of Directors were dressed in costume, area artists donated painted teapots for the silent auction, and we were treated to a tower of cupcakes for dessert.  Thank you First Book-Collier County for inviting us to share in this truly wonder-ful evening!
