Bloggers Support First Book In Blogathon 2009

Blogathon 2009Looking for a great way to raise money for a great cause such as First Book?  Several bloggers will be raising money for First Book in the upcoming Blogathon, to take place on July 25th, 2009.  If you are unfamiliar with what a Blogathon is, it’s essentially like a marathon without the running part. Blogathon 2009 is a 24 hour event during which participants blog every half hour to raise money for the charity of their choice.

So what brought bloggers to support First Book? One of our blog supporters, Erica Watson, from the Quirky Charm blog, had a chance to tell us all about her love for books.  “Books played a huge roll in my childhood. They were cherished friends who gave me comfort, joy, and adventure. Reading is still dear to my heart, fiction to non-fiction and everything in between,” she says.

Through Erica’s love for books, she has a vast awareness for the need to put books in the hands of all children. “A good book can make all the difference on a tough day. Through books we can relate to people through time and space. Books can reassure us, they can guide us, they can give us inspiration. It breaks my heart that there are so many who don’t know this simple pleasure, especially children,” she mentions.

With your help, and the support of bloggers like Erica, First Book can provide even more books to the kids who need them most. If you would like to support Erica in her blogging efforts, please visit her at Quirky Charm.  To learn more about participating in Blogathon, please visit the official Blogathon 2009 site.

Rainy Day Books

Rainy Day Books

When I was in grade school, I was always eager to buy the latest Goosebumps book or anything else that might grab my curiosity. Before I had ever heard of Borders or Barnes & Noble, a small used book store called Rainy Day Books was my most beloved childhood destination. Not only did it spark in me a craving for books, it was the only place where I could convince my mom to make any kind of purchase. Since most of these trips took place during the summer months, I was always given a minimum daily reading requirement to ensure I kept my mind rolling.

Unfortunately, many kids don’t have the opportunity to discover reading during the summer months. Summer, in fact, plays a crucial role in the increasing achievement gap between lower- and middle-class children. A whopping two thirds of this gap occurs during the summer months. By the end of fifth grade, many children living in poverty have fallen more than two years behind in verbal achievement.

So, it’s time to turn off the cartoons and turn on the imagination. One simple way to help bridge the achievement gap is this: help your kids read more. It’s vital to encourage reading in the summer, whether at home or in summer school programs.  Many public libraries offer children’s programs as well. If children read one million words a year, at least one thousand words will be added to their vocabulary.

First Book believes summer reading should be a reality for kids in need and our efforts to provide and increase access to new books are just one step towards this goal. Help those kids who don’t have access to the little book store that so much played a vital role in my childhood. One book can go a long ways. Thank you for joining us to improve the lives of thousands of children, making the future just a little bit brighter, one book at a time.

Today is National Summer Learning Day

President Obama has addressed educational awareness through his latest act – declaring today, July 9th 2009, as National Summer Learning Day, and calling youth throughout the country to partake in service as well as extracurricular activities.

National Summer Learning Day will consist of several nonprofit sponsored events across the country. These fun filled educational activities range from a group of Chicago students from Kids Keep Learning taking a trip to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, to a group of Harlem kids, involved in REAL Kids reading and enrichment summer program at Harlem, participating in a formal induction for summer baseball teams.

National Summer Learning Day looks to improve the summer for all children, moving kids from the couch to the community. A decrease in reading and learning over the summer months contributes to the achievement gap between middle and lower class children. In fact, according to a study at John Hopkins University, a summer loss of 3 months results in a gap of 18 months by the end of 6th grade.

Recently, members of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) hosted their sixth annual Surf Classic at Pacific Beach in San Diego, California.

Over 100 Pi Phis attended the Classic, watching on while dozens of surfers took to the waves in an effort to raise money for First Book to provide new books to kids in need.

The surf contest included both men’s and women’s brackets as well as a team competition. The all day classic also included a volleyball tournament, raffle, and barbecue in its fun-filled festivities. When the day was done, the event raised more than $8,500, which will support Pi Beta Phi’s literacy efforts and provide thousands of new books for kids in need across the country!
