Get ready for El día de los niños/El día de los libros!

Written by Matthew W.

Children’s Day/Book Day, also known as (Día), is right around the corner! A celebration of children, families, and reading held annually on April 30, Dia emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds and is actually an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925 when Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children.  In 1996, nationally children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found El día de los niños/El día de los libros.

The Association for Library Service for Children (ALSC) continues to increase public awareness of the event in libraries throughout the country. Hundreds will host special programs and events for Día. Click on this map to find out what’s happening in your area.  Please note that this is not a complete listing of participating libraries and events are subject to change. Don’t see an event in your community? Have your own Dia event for the kids you serve with books from the First Book Marketplace! If you order by April 13th, your order will ship on April 20th and just arrive in time for your Dia events on or around April 30th.

Don’t forget to click here for a great flier that you can download and handout at your Dia event, become a fan of Dia on Facebook, and consider some of these great Spanish only or Billingual Spanish/English books at 50-90% off list price from the First Book Marketplace’s El Día de los Niños section:
