Give a Lincoln for Literacy: Congressman Davis Celebrates Lincoln’s Birthday with Chicago-area Children

Written by Mary Beth F.

On Tuesday, February 10th, First Book celebrated the official launch of the Lincoln Legacy Initiative together with Congressman Danny K. Davis and the 1st grade students of Clara Barton Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois.

At the celebratory event, sponsors Wal-Mart, Motorola and RR Donnelley announced grants to bring thousands of new books to children in need in the greater Chicago metropolitan area.

Congressman Danny K. Davis, who chairs the Lincoln Legacy Initiative, read Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books to the students and shared personal stories about his love of Abe Lincoln and his journey to politics. In addition, each first grader received their own copy of Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books and Green Eggs & Ham.

In honor of the celebration of the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Legacy Initiative spotlights the importance of literacy and education. Individuals are encouraged to Give a Lincoln for Literacy ($5.00 donation) to place two new books into the hands of children in need throughout Illinois.
