At First Book, we’re strong believers that every child deserves to know the magic of bedtime stories — and we know you are too.
Few movies celebrate that magic quite like Disney’s upcoming BEDTIME STORIES – an adventure comedy starring Adam Sandler as Skeeter Bronson, a hotel handyman whose life is changed forever when the bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to mysteriously come true.
In celebration of the film’s December 25 release, Disney Publishing Worldwide will donate up to 250,000 brand new books to First Book.
Will you do your part and share YOUR story?
Now through December 25, post a comment below about your favorite bedtime story or memory and, in your honor, Disney will donate one new book to a child in need – just for commenting! It’s free, takes just a minute and will help make bedtime brighter for kids in need.
Thanks for your help — and don’t forget to buy a ticket on Fandango to see BEDTIME STORIES, opening in theaters December 25!

Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown was a soothing way to end the day as a little girl…
I discovered her companion “My World” as a parent and now I read both stories to my little ones at night…

One of my favorite books as a child was “Hop on Pop” - because my Dad (who longed to be called Pop but was disappointed because I never really used that term much) let me act out the book again and again. Hop on Pop literally came to life in our house!

My father read stories to me at bedtime all through my childhood. I have particular memories of all the great descriptions of meals in the Laura Ingalls Wilder books, especially Farmer Boy. We didn’t stop doing this until I was in high school. By then, he was reading Steinbeck and Kafka. “The Penal Colony” was not exactly cozy bedtime reading! It was a wonderful thing, and will always be one of my best memories of my dad.

One of my favorite memories is of my husband reading the Night Before Christmas to our daughter. They would both cuddle together in the bed as Nick read the story and did sound effects of the reindeer on the roof.

My son loved ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. After reading it, I always had to go to the window and tell the big bad wolf to go away so he could go to sleep. He’s 19 now and I miss those days!

One of my favorite bed-time read aloud memories is the Night Before Christmas. What better time and place than the night before Christmas in bed and pajama-ed up to hear mom read the whole story again making sleep for a five year old near impossible. I still remember laying there envisioning the starry night sky with Santa and his reindeer flying past my house. A great bed-time read!

Back in the late 1940’s, I only remember the classic Mother Goose collection being read to me (plus Bible stories.) Our first child became attached to Winnie the Pooh stories. And Go, Dog, Go became a family favorite as all 3 children & 2 adults enjoyed asking each other “Do you like my hat?”

One of the favorite stories I read to my children were nursery rhymes over and over as they could anticipate and read along with me. I would sometimes intentionally skip a line or a page and it was quickly pointed out to me that I missed a line or skipped a page :-) But, their other favorites and mine too were “Where the Wild Things Are”, “Goodnight Moon”, and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”.

As an only child growing up, I turned to books for companionship. As a result, I am an avid reader to this day. As an adult, I find that two of my favorite reads as a child have encouraged my son’s love of reading. One of my favorites was the Misty of Chincoteague series. I enjoyed it so much that I shared it with my son when he was young. We ended up vacationing in southern Ocean City in order to visit Chincoteague and Assateague. To this day, our family vacations take place overlooking Assateague so we can visit the ponies.
My second most memorable book as a child was Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison. My son loved the book as well so we scheduled a wonderful vacation to New York’s Letchworth State Park to visit her reconstructed longhouse and grave. I firmly believe the quote from the movie You’ve Got Mail “You are what you read.”

I remember my Mom reading my sister and me the story “The Little Match Girl” from a collection of Hans Christian Andersen stories. Even though it would make us cry every time we heard it, we would still beg my Mom to read it to us.
“Where the Wild Things Are” was another special one (and still is).

One of my favorites was called something like, “Please Mr. Elephant, Don’t Sneeze”… I also like (still!) “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig”. I read every single Nancy Drew book and I still have a collection of them. Lately I have been wanting to re-read A Wrinkle in Time.

My dad always made up stories for me and my sisters. There was usually a starting point for the stories that he would then somehow adapt to include three little girls. He continues to do the same for his grandchildren today.

I have always loved reading. When I was young, I remember reading book such as, Socks for Supper. As I got older, I would try to encourage this same love of reading with my sister by reading her many different kinds of books in the hopes of enticing her to enjoy the story. One day soon, I hope to be an English teacher so that I can nurture this same love of books in my students.

When my adult sons were growing up, I used to read The Polar Express (by Chris Van Allsburg) to them every Christmas Eve. The Biblical Christmas story and the Night Before Christmas were also read, but The Polar Express was saved for bedtime. It was a special part of Christmas.
Also, they each had a favorite book that they would ask me to read over and over. One was Drummer Hoff. The other was Tikki Tikki Tembo.
My favorite books growing up always included some kind of animal such as Walter Brooks Freddie the Pig, Walter Farley horse stories or Atwater’s Mr Popper’s Penguins. Reading is still a vital part of my life. I’ve spent the last 33 years working in libraries all over the country!

My mom loved to read The Runaway Bunny to me. She would say that the mommy bunny would always find the little bunny to love, no matter where he went. This was comforting to me when I was little because it reminded me that I would never be alone, even if I was lost. Now, as a teacher, I love reading stories to my students. I get really involved and act them out - it’s great fun for me and they are almost mesmerized by the story!

I’ll never forget reading “Goodnight Moon” to our children. I get a bit misty remembering, night after night, reading that as our last story before lights out. I love books..always have. I remember my parents always reading to me. Some of my favorites were all the Dr. Seuss books (dad made green eggs & ham for breakfast when I could read it on my own!) and the Lonely Doll books by Dare Wright. Now my son has the same love of books that I have! He brings me different books all the time, but when he was very young one of his favorites was The Napping House. I don’t remember the titles of my first books but I certainly enjoyed the Golden Books. Later, A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett was a special favorite and a dear friend gave me a copy for Christmas a couple of years ago. When my oldes child was young we bought one of those cheap Golden books at the grocery store. It was called Scuffy the Tugboat. We read that story to all 3 of our children and, even though they had bigger, fancier and more expensive books, they asked us to read “Scuffy” over and over. It’s been over 18 years since I read that book and I still treasure the memories.

The first book I remember was Watty Piper’s The Little Engine That Could. My relatives all loved to read to my sister and me, but my favorite memory is of my Uncle Johnny teasing us by making up totally ridiculous versions of the story. We would get very indignant and tell him what the story really was. Through these boisterous bedtime tales we learned not only to read for ourselves - to prove we knew when he was making it up - but to make up our own silly stories.

My children’s favorite bedtime book was a collection of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales. They truly enjoyed listening to each story. As they grew older we would discuss the moral of each story. I believe that they have learned a great deal from reading books and understanding the message within them. Another favorite author is Angela Johnson who writes wonderful childrens books and always includes a message in her stories. One of our favorite books by Angela Johnson is a book about a boy who loves the idea of flying and joins the Tuskegee Airmen in their battles of WWII called “Wind Flyers”. My 16 year old son read her book called “First Part Last” which is about a teenage boy who becomes a father and the struggles that he endures. My son learned what a burden it can be to be a parent at such a young age. This is a must read for the youth of today.

As a child my favorite bedtime story was a Disney version of the tale Stone Soup. It was called Button Soup and it was with Daisy Duck using a button to make soup. My dad would read that book to me every night. He didn’t mind reading it over and over again. He always read stories to me. I remember some of my other favorites being the Golden Books. I still have all of them. I loved Dr. Seuss and of course the classic fairy tale books. I am a teacher now and I love to read to my students. I read all of these stories and many “newer” children’s books.

One of my favorite bedtime stories was PINOCCHIO. I still have the book my mother
used to read to me–the 1950 Platt & Munk edition with illustrations by Tony Sarg.
Most of the drawings were in sepia but now and then, at a climactic turn in the story,
there would be a full color illustration — and I would wait for those
magical and glorious moments. I even remember the lines of dialogue
that went with them. For example, “There are lies that have short legs and
lies that have long noses. Your lie happens to be one of those that
have long noses…” As a mother,I followed in my own mother’s footsteps
and read the very same version of PINOCCHIO
to my sons.

My favorite book when I was about 3 was “Bears in the Night”… the Berenstein Bears. I remember being curled up with my Dad and even though I had memorized the story, I still loved so much to hear him read it. Eventually, I learned how to read (at a very early age) simply from the joy of having my parents read to me and then wanting to read back to them. Today, I enjoy buying my favorite classic children’s books for my “nieces” and “nephews” to continue the tradition. There’s simply nothing better than a good bedtime story!

A favorite growing up was Ogden Nash’s Tale of Custard the Dragon. My father read it to me (actually, he recited it from memory) with lots of expression and flouishes. While our copy was within a collection of Nash verses, I’ve seen the story in a picture book format too.

Fairies still are my favorite. My mother is a great story teller. When we were young my sister was into being a cowboy and wanted a set up guns and boots. Her wish was granted but then one day she left them in the yard. When she remembered, there was note in place of her guns, saying that “Mr. Wind had taken her guns since she really didn’t care for them. If she wanted them back she had to promise to keep good care of them.” She ran to my mom, crying that “Mr. Wind” had taken her guns and she was sorry. The next day, under the same tree was another note from “Mr. Wind”, telling her that he returned her things becasue he knew she was good to hear word, just like the cowboys were.
For me, I woke one morning, after loosing a tooth to find “fairy dust” all over my bed. I was sooo excited, I yelled for my mom. She told me that I must have “rolled over on to the tooth fairy and almost caught her under my body.” We scooped up the fairy dust and put into a little black bag. My mom told me that to “watch the sparkly fairy dust because it was magical and it would disappear”. Sure enough, the next day, my fairy dust was gone.
That was 30+ years ago and still brings a warm smile and loving memories.

It is such fun to tell people here in Hannibal MO that I, their Children’s Librarian, have never read THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER! The punch line is “my Mom was an English teacher - she read it to us”! another favorite story came about because our grandmother also read to us. I would fall asleep early and she had to back up the next night. I think my older sister found this frustrating. But falling asleep to a human voice is still very comforting!

I read to my children when they were little and they both now love to read as adults and have carried on the tradition with their children. Some of their favorite stories were GOOD NIGHT MOON, DR. SEUSS’ ABC book, and WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. Now I read to my grandchildren anything and everything. They have especially loved IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PARTY. Books are a perfect and appreciated gift with each of them.

When I was growing up, I read the Little Golden Books - LITTLE RED HEN and THE LITTLE RED CABOOSE (funny that I, a redhead, would love books about things with RED in the title).
Here’s the website for those and many other books for children. As an English professor, I work with future educators who will teach English Language Arts. As a member of my community, I support literacy by helping to procure donations of books to share with the youth at Teaching Family Homes, an organization that helps troubled children and families. If you haven’t thought about the gift of a book for the holidays, I ask you to do so today. And if you have a little extra, consider donating to an organization that works with children/teens who may need books in their group homes or residental treatment centers.
Happy Holidays!

As a child I loved books, and my mother said I was rarely seen without one in my hand and I was always bugging my parents and older siblings to read to me. There is something magical about having a story read aloud to you. I still love reading and love to read to young people to spread the pleasure of reading. I hope you get lots of great books donated!

My dad would always read to my sister and I at bedtime. Each birthday and Christmas we would get a new Dr. Seuss book. The best part of bedtime stories to me is just having someone read to you.

My mom was an elementary school teacher and read to me and my 2 sisters every night and also read us the Sunday “funnies” every week! There were so many books. I never had just one favorite but do remember really enjoying the Dr. Seuss books for young readers, especially “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” because I figured out how to read it myself pretty quickly and “Hop on Pop” because when my dad would come home from a business meeting and my sisters and I would all jump on him and hug him, he would say, “Stop! Don’t hop on Pop.” We loved it!!

What could be better than Charlotte’s Web? “Some Pig”! No matter how many times I heard the story, I still cried when Charlotte died.
I also had two favorites by a more obscure author: “Rusty” and “Frog” by Col. S. P. Meek. I wrote him a fan letter and we actually struck up a correspondence - what a lovely gift to an 8-year-old girl. :-)

My favorite book as a child was Moonraker by Ian Fleming. The chapters are arranged well so that each leaves you in suspense for the next. It’s hard to put down before going to bed.

My youngest son’s favorite book was Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. All of my children loved Dr. Seuss, all of the Golden Books classics, and Disney stories. In our family we encourage reading to infants from before birth, reading often to all children, and encourage reading skills. My 4 year old granddaughter reads at a 2nd to 3rd grade level. My 5 year old grandson is thrilled to display his sight word skills and my 1 year old grandson is well familiar with books and how they work. He loves to find matching pictures on the pages. The grandchild who is on the way will have books to read under the Christmas tree this year. My mantra is “Knowledge is never a negative.” In my family, a quest for knowledge is uppermost and reading skills are crucial.

We babysat for my cousins almost once a week for years, and often put them to bed. One of our favorite stories to read aloud to them was Fox in Socks. It’s amazing how good you can get at reading toungue twisters when you read them so regularly! My mom and I would see who could say them fastest.

One of my favorite stories to read to my grandchildren before they go to bed is A Fish Out of Water by Dr. Seuss. M husband and I have one goldfish that the children always want to feed. Now, we all laugh about what might happen if our Little Goldie eats too much!

I think of my best memories with the longest effects was that of “reading” with my mother children’s books on space. We’d sit on my bed, me in it and her on the side and look at the pictures and the words, sharing our ideas about what was “out there.”
While I cannot remember any specific titles–and do not, alas, have any of the books– I remember that the books of the mid- to late-1950s were filled with rocket ships and drawings of mysterious planets that had yet to be explored in any but the most rudimentary sense. But those images and the words filled my senses and imagination with passionate dreams of astronomy and a lifelong fascination that still fuels one of my favorite subjects.
109 pneumann // Dec 21, 2008 at 12:27 am
I don’t remember the title, but there was a small book (Golden Book?) I read to my girls about a child asking for a bedtime story. Her mother tells her a story about a small animal who asks its mother for a story when it is not sleepy enough at bedtime. It goes something like ‘Once upon a time there was a little (animal). It was time to go to bed, but the (animal) wasn’t sleepy. And he/she said “Mama, tell me a story!” So the mother says, “Once upon a time….” and it starts over. After many animals have joined the chain, a Mama animal starts the story but the baby has fallen asleep. Then the animals are each named in reverse order, because each of them in turn has fallen asleep. We especially liked the fact that this could be used to include favourite animals or even friends if you wanted to. The illustrations in the book were lots of fun, too.

First, the assignment: I learned to read The Little Red Hen while recuperating from polio. Somehow I think the hen’s gumption helped me keep working on the rehab exercises.
But my favorite story of bedtime reading was about 10 years ago when my husband and I were touring the US in our motorhome. A dark and rainy night led me to read to him “In which Piglet is Surrounded by Water” from Winnie the Pooh. That began a tradition for the remainder of the trip that I would read a chapter from Winnie the Pooh or The House at Pooh Corner every night at bedtime. It was amazing how often the story seemed to reflect the activities or moods of the day.
As a postscript, I’m disappointed there is such low participation on this project. Only 120? Perhaps the “leave a comment” window is too far buried in the page?
I’ve forwarded the email to a few dozen readers from my e-address book. I hope they have time for a quick addition by Christmas.

I can still remember following my mother around the house during the day, begging her to read me a story. My favorites included any fairy tale or folk tale, especially Sleeping Beauty, as well as picture books like “Not a Little Monkey,” by Charlotte Zolotow. At bedtime, though, it was my father’s turn to read to me. He made up marvelous stories about giants and blue birds. When he ran out of ideas, he turned to poetry books like “When We Were Very Young” and “Now We Are Six” by A.A. Milne, or novels like “Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame. I always looked forward to my Dad reading a chapter a night. It turned me into a lifelong reader. In fact, now I work in the Children’s Department of a very large bookstore.

“As I Was Standing in the Street,
As Quiet as Can Be,
A Great Big Ugly Man Came Up,
And Tied his Horse to Me.” This was a book of nonsense rhymes my children loved to read together, recite at odd times, and celebrate whimsy. As a teacher, I know we were learning language, phonemic awareness, patterns and rhythms, but at the time, we just knew we were having fun. I am visiting my eldest just now, and the prints I made him from that dog-eared book are proudly posted on his wall.

I may be almost 67 years old, and my father has been gone to heaven for the past 7 years, but I still remember him reading to my sisters and myself when we were small. It was at my mother’s insistance that he did so - he being a farmer who worked from dawn to dark - so we often heard stories from Outdoor Life magazine! However, he also read most of the Thornton W. Burgess “animal” stories to us, and these are the stories we have never forgotten hearing in his unique reading style!

I loved reading to my children, and now to my grand daughter. She has loved a book read to her I think since birth. My children had many favorites. My first daughter, had me read Cinderella to her so many times she knew the words on the page by heart before she was two and she recited them as I turned each page. My second daughter always surprised me, with her favorite being a book showing pictures of different animals in Alphabetical order, she loved to point to them and say their names, she would laugh out loud when we got to the “Tasmanian Devil”, we are christians and she thought it funny there was an animal with devil in its name, plus it was a funny picture. My baby Son loved any book that was about a motorized vehicle; goes to show you, boys are different. We had an abundance of books, and my children loved to play a game with them, they lined them up on the floor and pretended if they stepped off of them they would end up in danger!,,,we had so many books they would line them up from the play room ,down the hall to the living room couch and if they made it to the couch they were safe. I love the imagination of a child at play…I’m currently writing and illustrating my on children’s book, I hope it will join the ranks of many children’s favorite book.

My kids (7,6,4) love Moe Willems-”Knuffle Bunny” and “Knuffle Bunny, Too” and “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” but for bedtime, his best is “Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late.”
When they were a little younger, they loved “Going to Sleep on the Farm.”

My mom read to us all the time as kids… I remember Judy Bloom, the Chronicles of Narnia and lots of Shel Silverstein growing up. Now I read to my son, and hope he’ll pick up a love of books like I did.

I loved The Phantom Tollbooth! I remember reading an excerpt of it in elementary class and then going to the library to read the whole thing. I must have read that book almost every summer - I was obsessed. Of course I was very into Nancy Drew and The Baby Sitters Club as well!

As an adult, my favorite bedtime story is The Princess Bride. Not only as a story about Westley and Buttercup, but as the story of a father attempting to connect to his son and, vicariously, his own father. And The Thief of Always. As a kid, I buried my nose in Tolkien and C. S. Lewis.

While I have no memory of this, my mom and dad assure me that they used to read to me all the time, mostly Golden Books. My first recollections of books that I enjoyed reading were Dr. Seuss, but my first all-time favorite book to read was “A Wrinkle in Time.”

As a smaller child, I loved “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” you’ll have to give it a glass of milk. :)
Once I got a bit older, I would devour any Asterix book and Tintin book. I loved Captain Haddock “Blisterin’ Barnacles!” and Obelix “These Romans are crazy!” I still do actually, I’m using them to learn other languages. It’s great :D

Oh, so many! I loved anything Frog & Toad. Also crazy for Henry and Frances books. As I got older, I loved old school chapter books like Nancy Drew and Trixie Beldon mysteries. The best thing about being the youngest of six — lots of hand-me-down books!
Happy reading!

The earliest memory I have of reading by myself was a book about a detective who was trying to find the sheik’s runaway elephant. Turns out it got out of the zoo by building a set of stairs out of blocks of ice.
My father taught my brother and I to read, as he injured his back and was on extended disability. Reading was a HUGE thing in our family, and books were my favorite gifts - to give and to receive.
My husband and I have managed to instill that same love of books in our children. My daughter was a lucky beneficiary of a book from First Book. I am so thrilled to have learned about this opportunity for me to help give back.

Having a cold, no voice, and listening to my older son read a bedtime story to his little brother. Just the recollection of the two little heads close together over a book gets me a little teary even now.

I learned to read at an early age. Don’t recall anybody reading to me as a child. Didn’t read books for pleasure until I was in my later teens and found a few writers that I could identify with. Finally started reading Dr. Seuss when I was in my 30s. He’s still one of my favorite authors. Also started seeing Disney films (old and new) for the first time when I was in my 30s; beauty that no child should be without.

Some of my favorites were the Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley, and the Secret Garden. A few favorites from younger years include “Make Way for Ducklings” by Robert McKloskey, Bedtime for Francis (and other Francis books such as Bread and Jam for Francis) and Leo the Late Bloomer.
220 Emma_H // Dec 22, 2008 at 11:46 pm
My favourite bedtime story was “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. My father would read it to me faithfully, every night from as far back as I can remember, probably age 3 and a bit. After reading it to me, I would put the book under my pillow. I slept with it under my pillow until I was 9, and we moved to a new house, where it lived in the bookcase he built for me. Over the years, the book was replaced probably about 4 times. I still have the last copy he bought and inscribed with a “to Emma, with love from her Daddy”, and have read to my own grandchildren from it.

My parents instilled a love of reading from a very young age. We had several “story-a-day ’til Christmas” books, and those stories were always popular during December.
However, my absolute favorite had to be the Disney picture books they bought for me. The Great Mouse Detective was my favorite, even though I didn’t get to see the movie until years later.

I grew up in a house with a basement and since my Dad was a teacher, we had a full wall of apple and orange crates filled with books and comics books. As a result, I still have all of my favorite childhood books and many are Little Golden Books.
I don’t have one single story that stands out as my favorite as I loved so many of them! If I had to pick one it would probably be Rudolph who is still beloved to me. Flipping through those books now is like entering a time machine of a happy childhood.
All I can do is stress the importance of having children read and/or having stories and tales told to them. Thanks to Disney for donating books to First Book!

The love of my childish bookshelf was Mimi the Merry-Go-Round Cat by Dorothy Haas. So much so that despite it’s having been out of print for 3 decades, I hunted down a copy to share with my own daughter. Nearly 6 now, she probably doesn’t love that book as much as Mommy did - but she certainly loves books as much as I!! :)
The joy of reading is something every child should know. Thanks Disney & First Book!

I don’t recall bedtime stories when I was a kid, but my twin girls are all about a good book before they get tucked into bed. Their favorite books are the Disney Princesses or How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. I think we read the Grinch until July and he’s back again.
The best way to end my day is reading a book to my daughters.

My Grandpa used to always read me “Katie Comes First.” Katie is a doll owned by a girl whose parents run a doll hospital, but there never is time to make Katie look beautiful from the years of love that Ruth has given her. Finally one day, it’s her turn! Every other page was in color and the pictures where beautiful. I now read it to my own daughter.

One of my favorites when growing up was Charlotte’s Web. I grew up on a farm raising pigs so I could identify with Fern. I loved reading all books. I grew into the Little House on the Prairie Books. I fostered reading in my children. It pleases me to know they are fostering reading in their children. My grand-daughter Haylee has her own cabinet full of books at my house. She goes to it and selects 4 or 5 books at a time for me to read to her. Her parents read to her each night and then she “reads” herself to sleep. She is almost 3, and reads the pictures to herself until she falls asleep. Reading is so important.

We finished Charlotte’s Web a while ago, and now they are into the Chronicles of Narnia. 2 and 4, and they LOVE to read and be read to!!!

Any book by Beverly Cleary (http://www.beverlycleary.com/books/index.html), Peggy Parish (adventures of “Amelia Bedelia”), and Clifford B. Hicks (adventures of “Alvin Fernald”) were great reading, better than watching & sharing the one TV in the house. ;-) Sci Fi and mystery from Charles Fontenay (’Kipton Chronicles’) and The ‘Mother Goose’ stories, any book of “Fairy tales”, and mythology are timeless adventures that I would loved to read any time.
444 Stacey H // Dec 24, 2008 at 11:13 am

Good bedtime book: Grover’s Very Bad Awful Day or something like that. He drops his ice cream on the ground, steps in gum, forgets his homework. Hilarious. That guy had it rough.

465 Margaret // Dec 24, 2008 at 1:53 pm
My favorite bedtime story was The Twits by Roald Dahl. My parents would read my brother and I a chapter each night, and we simply delighted in hearing about the horribly inventive things the horrible twits would do to each other.
466 Margaret // Dec 24, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Someone else mentioned The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats and I have to agree that it’s one of the best picture books of all time. I used to have to read it again and again and again and again to the kids in the nursery I supervised.

A few years ago I volunteered at an elementary school and read to the 5 year olds. They took turns so I read one-on-one to several students each time I volunteered. The rewarding thing was the excited look on those little faces when I walked into the school room-each wanting a turn. Books and reading seem to be so important to each of them.

My favorite book was by Doris Burns, Andrew Henry’s Meadow..at some point, we all thought about what would it be like if we ran away and created our own home, world, etc. Andrew Henry is a child and an “inventor.” It is a great story with a wonderful ending. I bought the book for my children and read it to them.

When I was younger, I pretty much just loved EVERY Disney book there was. I had all of them and loved reading through them a million times. Even when I was younger and didn’t actually know hw to read I looked through the pictures and knew the stories from the movies =]

Have to give my vote to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A classic and fav from my childhood.

My brother used to tell me stories and make them up, he was a really good writer, so was my sister. The best part was that after reading a book they would “create” the sequel and tell more of the story because I simply never wanted it to end! I think that’s what makes all the Disney stories fun now, they keep us enthralled with the sequel!

This is fantastic!
My brother would tell me stories he made up, as well. He had a way of incorporating us two, as well as all of our favorite toys. He has such an imagination, and I hope he writes a children’s book one day.

Always read Thomas the Tank Engine to my son. At 18 he still has all the books and toys as keepsakes.

No book was better read aloud than a Dr. Seuss book. The mix of rhymes, then no rhymes, kept the mind working, and the visuals were ahead of their time.

I might have missed it but if not! I love to read to my 2 year old daughter and she will not go to be without at least one book read to her! Her current favorites are Sandra Boynton’s “Horns to Toes” and Bob Shea “Dinosaur vs Bedtime”

When I was a child there were no computer chips or fancy additions to books. My favorite book was a book of Grimm’s fairy tales and nursery rhymes with simple noises like beeping a horn and ringing a bell. My older sister would read to me and I would do the noises.

I loved reading Richard Scarry’s book, The Best Word Book Ever, to my boys. They loved identifying all the objects in the book and it helped them talk at a very young age. I enjoyed watching their enthusiasm. As a mom, reading was such a heartwarming experience to share with my boys.

Every night before bed my dad would read to me- sometimes one book, sometimes two. Over time I have realized just how important that was to our relationship, the development of my mind, and the blossoming of my creativity. It’s a ritual I’ve distinctly made myself aware of continuing.

My grandmother read us so many stories when we were little. I especially remember a book called “Best Book of Bedtime stories” and a lovely story about a brownie and a pony.

I don’t remember my mother reading to me, but I remember reading beneath the covers when I should have been sleeping! My fondest bedtime stories are those centering around reading to my own daughters when they were younger. Their favorite was Goodnight, Moon, and as soon as I was finished reading it, they would say, “Again!” Sometimes I read that book to them five times a night before they’d finally be satisfied.
