Volunteer at a First Book Distribution

November 10th, 2008 by Andy W. · 2 Comments · Book Distributions, General

First Book is looking for volunteers like you to help us distribute books to children in need through our National Book Bank distributions. We conduct book distributions throughout the year in cities and towns across the country. Distributions typically last 1-4 days and volunteers are needed for all or any part of that time. All of the books we distribute go to children from low-income families – and for some, these may be their first new books. By volunteering, you will not just be fighting illiteracy, but truly making strides to end it.

VOLUNTEER ROLES:

Volunteering at a book distribution is a rewarding experience for both individuals and groups. Distributions usually take place in a large warehouse, where books are sorted, picked up by recipient groups, and prepared for shipping.

Much of the help needed is physical labor, such as lifting, carrying and sorting boxes. We also need help with less physical tasks, such as labeling boxes and greeting recipient groups. Closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes that can get dirty are a must.

I am very interested in participating in a First Book distribution within 25-30 miles of my home in Louisville, KY if I know ahead of time and can plan my schedule. Reading and putting books in the hands of children who would otherwise not have them has always been a passion of mine. Serving on an Advisory Board for my area would also be something that would interest me. Please contact me. Thanks.
