What do you get when you mix one rainy day, 4 steadfast partners, 40 volunteers, 100 trash bags and 5000 books? A Make A Difference Day that goes on, rain or shine.
On Saturday, October 25, USA Weekend Magazine joined forces with Greater DC Cares , Washington Parks and People and First Book to make a difference at this year’s annual day of service in Marvin Gaye Park where about 40 volunteers wielded shovels and trash bags, donned gloves and boots, and cleaned up the park and stream enjoyed by the community. First Book donated 5,000 books to the six elementary schools serving the children from the community surrounding the park.
Joining the volunteers for opening remarks, and rolling up their shirtsleeves to help, were Madye Henson, CEO, Greater DC Cares; Marcia Bullard, President & CEO, USA WEEKEND; and Kyle Zimmer, President & Co-Founder, First Book.
In the end, the rain won out, but not before these passionate volunteers cleared leaves and debris to make room for many days of beautiful fall fun in the park. They made the difference. It is true that a few committed people can change the world. I’ve seen it!
