First Book’s Top Ten Reasons to Read

September 23rd, 2008 by Joan S. · 6 Comments · Books & Reading

All of us at First Book love to read books. We’re partial to them as a first choice for entertainment. We love to give them as gifts. In fact, if you walk around our offices, you can’t help picking up a children’s book and flipping through the pages. We really like to read around here.

And we asked ourselves, why? Is it because once we read a book cover to cover we’re wiser and more informed? Have we been introduced to a classic character? Did we travel to a far off place? Can we tell our friends we’ve read the latest new novel? We polled the staff, and asked them to tell us their top reasons to read.

We thought it might be fun to share the results! Enjoy!

Top Ten Reasons to Read

 10.   It’s fuel efficient.

  9.   You need to have a backup in case the TV and Internet go out.

  8.   It’s fun.

  7.   A flight attendant will never ask you to turn off your book.

  6.   If you like to read, you’ll never be alone.

  5.   No Commercials.

  4.   Reading makes school a lot easier.

  3.   It’s less fattening than chocolate.

  2.   So you can say with authority: the book was better.
and the top reason to read:

  1.   (Almost) everybody’s doing it!

    1. No need for a bailout from the federal gov’t
to library staff, bookstore employees or
    people in the publishing/printing business!

While I am reading I can be as brave or pretty or daring as any character. I can be climbing mountains or riding a spirited horse or singing in front of thousands of people. While I am reading…I can be…just be! That is the beauty of reading to me.
