As a freshman at American University, I was given the opportunity to have an internship fall semester. Out of the 10+ businesses and organizations I met with, I chose First Book. Waking up at 7am each Wednesday and Thursday is not easy for a college student, but working with First Book makes it worthwhile.

Working with the corporate team, I do online research on companies, enter data in spreadsheets, call groups who receive books, sit in on some meetings, and send lots of emails. My favorite aspects of working here at First book include working as part of the Viral Team in our web-based initiatives such as Facebook and MySpace, and interacting with the corporate team in outreach and research.

I’m really excited about some of the new titles on the First Book Marketplace- just in time for fall!

You can “fall” into reading with spooky ghosts, sparkling pumpkins and even Winnie the Pooh! Also, be sure to check out the recent addition of art supplies.

Community programs serving children in need can order these titles (and many more) online at http://www.fbmarketplace.org. Orders placed by Monday October 15 will be ready to ship from our warehouse on October 19—just in time for Halloween!

As a savvy internet user (come on, admit it, you’re on the blog!), it’s highly likely that even if you don’t have an account on Facebook or MySpace, you have probably at least checked out the sites online. First Book recently created a team that is focused on getting our mission out to the masses, and what better way than for free on a social networking site?

Why in the world would a nonprofit like First Book create accounts on Facebook and MySpace? One of our goals is to get more people familiar with First Book, so that they can help us provide more books to kids. We’re also using these sites as a way to engage new ambassadors and volunteers by giving people options to get involved: whether it’s by donating a few dollars on our Facebook Cause, heeding a call to action by participating in a local community event, or inspiring someone to start an Advisory Board in their area. The opportunities are endless!

If you are a member of MySpace or Facebook, then please check out or profiles! On Facebook we not only have a profile, but as I mentioned above we have a cause and also a group, and we encourage you to join all three. Add us as your friend today and help us spread the word about First Book!

Members from nine First Book Advisory Boards drove great distances and battled Jersey traffic to attend the First Book University – Jersey City Seminar on September 24th. They were welcomed by Bruce Springsteen on the iPod along with First Book staff members. There was a great level of enthusiasm throughout the day as volunteers asked many questions and garnered ideas from one another.

Lorenzo R., chair of First Book-Jersey City received a Hero Award for the dedication he has shown to his community as well as for helping to organize the Seminar.
