Members of First Book-Kootenai pose with First Book staff

First Book-Kootenai

Monday, April 23rd - Woke up today well before the alarm clock, my body forgetting that it was supposed to be on Pacific Time.

We met with four Advisory Boards today, each unique in their own way, and once again showing the reason that First Book Advisory Boards nationwide are so successful is the autonomy that each group has to make First Book fit within their own community.

1. First stop was First Book-Kootenai. An energetic, new board, that is off to a great start. They are planning an used-book fundraiser, including the children of their community to collect books that they have outgrown. We took a picture for the paper, and as you can see they are a happy group of volunteers!

2. Next we headed to the Couer D’Alene Casino to meet up with the members of First Book-University of Idaho. After a quick lunch meeting at one of the buffets, and no time for the slots, we went with the CAB to Lakeside Middle School where the school was having an assembly for “TV Turn off Week”. This was a great opportunity to see how First Book serves the Native American communities in the region, and the students seemed excited to receive yet another book to build their home library.

3. First Book-Latah County was our next stop on the itinerary and Tonya showed this group of community members the new resources for outreach to local businesses and organizations that First Book has created to help our boards succeed in their community.

4. The final meeting of the day was also dinner at a fun Italian restaurant with the First Book-Lewis and Clark Campus Advisory Board. This CAB, straddled between Washington State and Idaho, has done amazing things in their community on both sides of the state line. Recipient Groups, university faculty, and board members all came together to share their successes with First Book and their love of reading. It was a wonderful way to end the day!

A quick stop to buy bottled water and snacks for tomorrow’s road trip, and then we were at our hotel for the night. Tonya and I were tired, but in good spirits, thanks to the energy and commitment that we were able to witness in our Advisory Boards all day!
