A SUPER-Hero for Reading

A few weeks ago my colleague Heather J. and I were visiting some of the many heroes that volunteer with our First Book Advisory Boards in Pennsylvania. Little did we know, as we sat down to meet with the newly formed First Book-Greater Harrisburg Advisory Board, that we were going to me a real SUPER-hero.

Floyd Stokes is the Executive Director of the American Literacy Corporation in Harrisburg, PA. Floyd is also know as SuperReader when he puts on a cape and mask to encourage and promote a positive attitude and excitement towards reading for young students.

This innovative approach uses a live super hero to represent the winning characteristics of a reader such as intelligence, power, strength, self-confidence and high self-esteem. SuperReader recently made an appearance at a half-time show for the Philadelphia 76ers. You can view pictures of SuperReader visiting some Head Start children on pennlive.com.

It was such a joy to meet Floyd and the rest of the Advisory Board dedicated to fighting illiteracy in the Greater Harrisburg area. To find out how you can get involved with First Book in Harrisburg, please contact the Board directly at harrisburg_pa@firstbook.org. To join other Advisory Boards across the country please search for an Advisory Board in your community or find out how to join or start an Advisory Board in your area.
