The First Book National Book Bank recently received this email from one of our recipient groups:

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You provided 4,552 books for the children of Greenwood, Abbeville and McCormick Counties in South Carolina and the children, parents, and teachers loved them! As you might be aware, South Carolina ranks 48 in the nation in education, and our three counties does not fare well in the literacy department. These books provided us the opportunity to further express the importance of reading to our children. Please do not forget our need for books in the future. Thanks again!

BordersWhat’s better after the holiday crush than curling up with your cat, a hot drink and a new book? We’re biased at First Book, but the answer is nothing!

Except for the cat, you can get those wonderful things at your local Borders store. And best of all, when you shop at a Borders, Borders Express, Brentano’s or Waldenbooks store now through Sunday, December 31st, you can make a donation to First Book right at the register. Help us share the relaxing retreat that only books can provide with children in need nationwide.

Recently, Time Magazine announced that their Person of the Year for 2006 is “YOU!” The article says that 2006 was

“…a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people’s network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.”

At First Book, we launched our way into the “new web” this year with our First Book blog to build a community of friends and partners concerned about children’s literacy. We’ve had a lot of fun writing about the work we’ve been doing across the country.

But we couldn’t declare our blog a success without “YOU!”, our readers! Whether you’ve been with us since the launch, or you just found us today, we’d like to thank “YOU!” for being a part of our community and helping us change the way the world changes. We look forward to sharing more stories with you in 2007!

Many of you may have already heard, but J.K. Rowling announced the title of her seventh and final Harry Potter book yesterday! Now, I could just tell you what it is, or I could tell you how to find it on her website. Maybe I’ll do both! If you’re feeling adventurous, follow these instructions as they were originally posted on CNN.com:

If you go to her homepage at JKRowling.com, click on the eraser and you will be taken to a room — you’ll see a window, a door and a mirror. In the mirror, you’ll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. Then click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a wreath appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you’ll see a garland. Look for a cobweb next to the door. Click on it, and it will disappear. Now, look at the chimes in the window. Click on the second chime to the right, and hold it down. The chime will turn into the key, which opens the door. Click on the wrapped gift behind the door, then click on it again and figure out the title yourself by playing a game of hangman.

Or, if you’d rather just read it here, the title is…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Spooky huh? So, who’s excited!?!?

All proceeds will be donated to First Book and will help place new books into the hands of children in need in the Pittsburgh community.

As a special thank you, every donor has a chance to win two round-trip flights to any nonstop destination served by JetBlue Airways — so don’t forget to enter to win. Please visit the Mall at Robinson website to learn more about this opportunity.
