A Board is Born!

October 16th, 2006 by Elena B. · No Comments

Across the country, 260 First Book Advisory Boards bring our mission right into their home towns. They work hard, they make it happen and in the end there are many happier children who will remember their first book. Since we wouldn’t be successfull without the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, we asked David McMillian, Chair of one of our newest Boards, First Book-Troup County, Georgia to share his story:

I guess it all started as I was looking for ways to get books for underprivileged families through a service project I was working on, when I found First Book on the internet. I was immediately hooked with the scope, connections, and success First Book has in communities.

The concept of First Book was presented throughout the community. It really sparked an interest, as people saw the potential for success to an ongoing problem in Troup County of children’s literacy. This idea spread through the school system, businesses, other literacy programs, United Way, the Rotary Club, and even the Troup County Chamber of Commerce.

We officially became First Book-Troup County, GA about two weeks ago and our entire Advisory Board is very excited to begin to grant our first books out. We all recognize the need in our community and look forward to seeing the foundational impact we know First Book will have on children.

We look forward to seeing many wonderful successes in their community. Welcome First Book-Troup County!
