Donna O’connor, our wonderful Advisory Board Chair in Kansas City, has high praise for Townsend Press and a donation they made to the First Book National Book Bank. Donna writes:

I planned to write you for some time now to let you know how popular the Bluford High series has been at both of my schools. Last year I gave class sets to each junior high literature teacher for seventh and eighth grade and all the kids loved them, so much so that the students have begged and begged to continue reading those books and not the other reading materials the teachers had scheduled.

The sixth grade students heard so much about these books from the older students that their classes started fussing about not having the opportunity to read the books until the following year. Both teachers said it’s the first time they have had such a reaction from children regarding a reading selection. As this school year starts, one of the first questions was “What books are we reading from the Bluford series?” Obviously they were well received. Our students are mostly Hispanic and could really relate the characters. It was a great experience to see some of our “reluctant” readers clamoring for more.
