Some Scary Titles for Halloween
October 30th, 2006

2 Comments »Here are the books I found to be most scary.
In college, I was scared witless knowing I had to read Financial Accounting 101.
Later in life, What To Expect When Your Expecting gave me nightmares about what can go wrong during pregnancy.
Lately nothing has been scarier than reading the Kelley Blue Book Used Car Guide. It’s frightening how quickly new cars depreciate.
I’m terrified to read anything about retirement planning. A short pamphlet called How Much You Need To Retire sent me shrieking from my accountants office.
Sadly, as a child I clearly remember crying uncontrollably after reading a hardcover collection of children stories. Upon putting it back on the shelf, it fell and hit me on the head.
But perhaps the scariest of all is reading about the small number of books children from low-income families have in their homes. Want to help? Donate to First Book.

Last week Heather K. and I had the privilege of meeting another hero in the fight against illiteracy. Diane Skog is the Program Director of Raising Readers, an innovative program in Maine that promotes reading aloud to children ages birth to 5 years. Raising Readers provides Family Practice and Pediatric providers beautiful new books to give to children at well child visits two months to five years. For newborns, they give books in canvas totes to Maine hospitals, birth centers, midwives, and adoption agencies. Since the launch of their program in May 2000, Raising Readers has distributed over 825,000 books to children in Maine.

10 Comments »A group of fellow First-Bookers and I decided to try our hand at the culinary arts. Not just any culinary arts, mind you — children’s-book-inspired culinary arts. The tale you are about to read, a tale in photos, is one of a few, brave, pioneering souls and their quest for green eggs and ham…

On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!

Leave a Comment »I haven’t lived in my hometown for many years, so when the First Book-Huron County, Ohio Advisory Board invited me to return for a Speed Read Event that they were hosting, I was pleased to come back and support their efforts. I had volunteered briefly with these remarkable people before moving to DC to work at the national office, so I was familiar with their efforts and appreciative of how incredibly hard they all work to help children in my native community.
It was a great event! Held at the first Annual Norwalk Heritage Festival, the readers were leaders from all aspect of the community, including politicians, candidates, school administrators, business leaders, and sponsors. The readers, all who read Go, Dog, Go! as fast as they could, seemed to be enjoying themselves along with the crowd. Most importantly, the event raised valuable funds for the community, and got the word out about First Book in the community!
As for me, it is always wonderful to see Huron County’s Advisory Board thriving, the community coming together around a great cause, and being on a business trip that includes waking up to my mother’s blueberry pancakes.

First Book-Lynn and Health Center Give Books to Kids in Lynn, Massachusetts
October 25th, 2006

Leave a Comment »Last Friday, Heather K. and I had the pleasure of attending a very special book distribution at the Lynn Community Health Center in Lynn, Massachusetts. Working together, the Health Center’s Reach Out and Read program and the First Book-Lynn Advisory Board gave forty preschoolers from Lynn Head Start their first new books.
In addition to receiving their books and having a fun snack, the children listened to stories read by local corporate supporters of First Book-Lynn. It was quite a treat for all of us to see these men and women in suits get down on the floor and read with these 3 and 4 year olds.
