Children’s Literature Icons Celebrated in NYC

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, founded in part by beloved children’s author Eric Carle and a proud partner of First Book, has announced the launch of The Carle Honors!
The awards are designed to recognize those who have demonstrated a lifelong dedication to the creation, support, and promotion of the art of the picture book. The awards and their inaugural recipients — Rosemary Wells, Helen Bing, Ann Beneduce, and Mort Schindel — will be celebrated tonight at a special Benefit Dinner in New York City, hosted by Leonard S. Marcus and Jane Curley.

The first presentation of the Carle Honors, by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, took place this past Monday evening, September 25th, at the University Club, in New York City. The idea behind these new awards, which as a member of the museum’s board I helped design and plan, is to recognize the many kinds of creativity that go into the making of picture books and–just as important–into the work of seeing that the books go out into the world. As a result, each year, an “Artist” award will honor an illustrator for his or her lifetime of work. Also, as “Angel” or benefactor will be recognized who has helped make possible exhibitions, conferences, and other book-related outreach projects. Also a “Mentor” with be honored–an editor or art director or librarian who has been a champion of picture books and the artists who make them. And finally, a “Bridge”–someone who, whether as a filmmaker or educator or child psychologist or professional in some other field has brought picture books to new audiences, thereby bridging the book world to society as a whole in an inspired and useful way. I hope you will come to the museum one day and watch for the some of the ways that we are planning to bring the museum out into the world more, via traveling exhibitions and a soon-to-be-launched new web site, among other possibilities.
