Interview with Walter Dean Myers at BEA06

May20
2006
Written by Jen W.

Today marked another great moment for First Book. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers — that is, MR. Walter Dean Myers to the fans of Sharon Creech’s Love That Dog — signed copies of his new book from HarperCollins Children’s Books, The Harlem Hellfighters. Mr. Walter Dean Myers sat down to chat with me for what was perhaps the highlight of my BEA 2006 experience. Listen to the interview to hear about his thoughts on James Baldwin, what it’s like to be a character in a book, and more!

One of the best moments of Mr. Walter Dean Myers signing happened after he was finished and getting ready to leave. A teacher shyly came up to him and told him, in a shaky, tear-filled voice that was choked with emotion, that his writing had made a difference in the lives of the children that she’s taught for nearly 25 years. You could just tell the impact that his work had on her…it was an incredibly special moment.

Hello! I was wondering how to get in touch with Mr. Myers. I wanted to send a request for him to visit the middle school where I teach. If you have any information, please forward at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
