Blogging at BEA

BEA Hall During Setup
Big news! We’ll be blogging all weekend long from this year’s Book Expo America at the Washington Convention Center. We’ll have videos, photos and interviews coming all weekend long from some of the biggest names in writing: E.D. Baker, Michael Buckley, Kirsten Miller, David McPhail, James Patterson, Erica Perl, Joshua Prince, Rob Scotton, and more.

If you won’t be attending BEA yourself this year, then keep checking back here as we’ll be posting new content as fast as we can get it up. It should be an exciting weekend!

Gerard putting together the backdrop for the boothWe began setup for our booth today. I was blown away at how large the the exhibition hall was - and this was just for children’s literature! Our own booth is modest in size but that doesn’t mean we don’t put forth our best into setting it up. You’ll notice Gerard at right doing what I would call a fairly good Superman impression.

Team Huddle - several First Book staff members discussing booth setupOne of the most important parts to making any booth successful, of course, is proper picture placement. Here we see four First Bookers discussing quite intensely regarding the proper smiling child placement (they really are some great photos we have up.)

What really caught my eye was this:

Sign reading Toy Industry Association, set on an empty table

The Toy Industry Association is in the booth right next to us! I honestly have no idea who the Toy Industry Association is nor who they represent, but I figure the odds are in my favor that I’ll at least get to play with something fun (if childish) this weekend :D. I just hope they don’t bring anything too noisy and loud.

We took bets on how fast we’d get the booth up, (we didn’t actually keep track of who won.) It all went up surprisingly fast, however. All and all, a job well done. I’m looking forward to this weekend.

Stay tuned…

Would love to hear more about “Literacy and Justice for All”. I vote and will try to get others to vote as well. As a Kiwanian it would be wonderful to give books to my community and possibly start a new program localy.

    David,

Awesome! We’d love to help you bring books into your community. If you haven’t done so already, send us a note at blog@firstbook.org with your contact info. I’ll make sure that the right person gets in contact with you.

As for Literacy and Justice, it’s our Book Expo America campaign to raise awareness about literacy. We’re collecting votes all weekend long (paper ballots at BEA as well as online) for an additional distribution of 50,000 books in the winning state. Vote every day and be sure to tell your friends the same, (and your freinds’ friends, and your friends’ friend’s friends…!)

You can read more about it in this post here:
