Over the years I’ve seen many interesting things being advertised on my morning coffee cup. I have to admit that most of the time I’m not quite awake enough to really pay attention. A friend introduced me to the Starbucks’ “The Way I See It” quotes when she shared a few she thought were noteworthy in her annual Christmas letter. Yesterday I saw the following bit of wisdom peeking out from under the sleeve on my afternoon pick-me-up cup of Starbucks:
The Way I See It #103
For all those parents who wonder,
How do I get my kids to read? –
here’s a simple, earthshaking
notion: give them a book. For gosh
sakes, give them a couple books.–James Patterson
I heard that Mr. Patterson may be participating in our blog from Book Expo America. I’m looking forward to hearing more from him! I also plan to pay more attention to my morning cup of coffee, you never know what you’ll find.

Since there are many parents who cannot afford to give their child a book to own, we have been trying to include a book into each birthday gift bag that we provide for kids who are homeless or living in shelters on their birthday. For those of us who have more gifts than we need on our birthday, giving a book to a homeless child on their birthday would be a treasured gift. Visit http://www.cheerfulgivers.org

… and let’s not forget to give families books in their home language … here’s a message in Spanish. We also have it in Dakotah, Hmong, and Somali: Platicar – Ver libros – Escribir
¿¿¿Conoce a un niño menor de 5 años ???
Entonces usted debe de platicar con él
Ver libros con él
y dejar que escriba
aunque sean garabatos

Just a quick update about James Patterson and his support of First Book at BEA this year: James will be doing a very special book signing for us at the First Book Booth (#5120) on SATURDAY, May 20, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM — so if you’re attending BEA, don’t miss out. We’d love to see you there!
