Well, yesterday was Tuesday. I have to admit - I was really concerned at our afternoon team meeting. It was 2:30, I hadn’t moved a box all day, we had sent everyone back to the camp site, and our discussion was centered around what we could think of for the next two days to arrange for future book distributions. Please note the word “future” in that sentence. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the volunteer corps had potentially done more work than fathomable in the course of just a few hours. WAHOO!
The women’s committee at the local Baptist church – complete with a Louisiana Tech professor and Bernice I volunteer - hosted a delicious taco salad evening for all thirty of us. The community women spent some time helping me with my new linguistic goals for this week: fixin’ and reckon. I’m having difficulty figuring out how to properly use these two words in conversation. They also taught me how to make y’all possessive - the proper spelling is y’all’s. Now, I think that looks ridiculous – but I have blamed that on my “snow country” upbringing.
We said goodbye to some of our volunteers from Biloxi who were heading back to their base, but learned of another crew coming up from the coast in the morning. Someone should call Lonely Planet – Bernice has become the newest, greatest vacation destination.
A Shout Out:
Elizabeth “Black Bean” Matthews
Elizabeth has taken the role of a community organizer to a new level. In addition to starting new Advisory Boards she built a presentation team and, with Ms. Kay, went to Spearsville High School to talk about opportunities with First Book, Americorps, and Hands On. The presentation is in high demand and will be traveling locally for the next few days (no joke!)
But, my favorite community-organizing role is watching Elizabeth slowly educate the entire town about how to feed a vegetarian. A vege-what? Removing bacon from every dish at the preparation stage is more difficult than it sounds — I’m so glad Elizabeth is here to take the bull by the horns….err….the carrot by the root?
