In Full Bloom!
March 31st, 2006

Leave a Comment »Today a few First Bookers took a mid-day adventure, affectionately called “in bloom at noon,” to view the numerous cherry trees that are in peak bloom this week along the Tidal Basin. It was a perfect day to go as the blossoms and the weather were both spectacular!
We walked from the office all the way to the Jefferson Memorial to see Eric Meany, a Washington, DC based singer/songwriter perform at the Tidal Basin stage, just overlooking the basin dotted with paddle-boaters. Eric was described as
“bringing an always incisive and sometimes humorous point of view to his original songs. Accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, he brings the audience into his world, entertains them, enlightens them, and sends them happily on their way.”
I’m not sure if I totally agree with this, but he was rather amusing with some of his song subjects (one was something to the effect of “I’d be happier if you weren’t here” sung a lively, upbeat and folksy tune) - perhaps he’d be better off just sticking to singing other people’s songs!
In any case, we had the added bonus of getting some great people-watching along our way. There were tens of kids, moms corralling kids, the token die-hard city joggers and even a smattering of small dogs running about the Tidal Basin area. We also had the pleasure of over-hearing tourists and their too loud conversations about battleships that they toured 15 years ago. Oh, the joys of Washington in the spring! But all the same, take advantage of the beautiful spring weather over the next few days and take a stroll down to the Tidal Basin - it’s certainly worth it!

Wednesday was, yet again, unbelievable…

Back to the Future

Leave a Comment »Well, yesterday was Tuesday. I have to admit - I was really concerned at our afternoon team meeting. It was 2:30, I hadn’t moved a box all day, we had sent everyone back to the camp site, and our discussion was centered around what we could think of for the next two days to arrange for future book distributions. Please note the word “future” in that sentence. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the volunteer corps had potentially done more work than fathomable in the course of just a few hours. WAHOO!

S’more Fun Than We Could Handle!

1 Comment »When you think about book distributions these words are probably not the first that come to mind: hiking, singing, canoeing, barbeque, and campfire. (Well, singing might – but belting out “Life is a Highway” on your third trip to Wal-Mart of the week isn’t exactly what we’re talking about.)
Last night Elizabeth, Tabitha, Kevin and I were sitting around a campfire at Lake D’Arbonne State Park with some new friends - Kevin was keeping a beat on a bongo drum, Grant (a Hands On network volunteer on his first assignment) was strumming the guitar, Joe (a long term Hands-On volunteer based in Biloxi) was singing under his breath, and everyone else was making S’mores on a blazing hot campfire with hand-crafted marshmallow sticks. Inside the lodge, another group was engaged in a game of ‘solitaire frenzy’, deep conversations, and I even think a few volunteers had gone on a night hike through the park. All I could think about was how this is exactly how we should do every book distribution.
